IYTA Teachers Open Forum: Practicing Aparigraha A Community Conversation on Non-Grasping and Generosity in Yoga and Life
SAT FEB 21, 2026, 11 AM - 12 PM EST

What does it mean to live with a light heart, free from the burden of excessive accumulation, attachment, and possessiveness—as a teacher, a practitioner, and a human being?

Join us for the Fifth in our Series of our open discussions exploring the Yamas through the lens of lived experience.

In this open forum, we’ll explore Aparigraha (non-grasping/non-possessiveness) as a living practice of inner freedom, contentment (santosha), and generosity. Together we’ll reflect on how we let go of what is no longer serving us—whether physical possessions, outdated ideas, emotional baggage, or rigid expectations—to create space for abundance and presence.

Thoughts and Questions to Contemplate...

  • How does the concept of Aparigraha extend beyond the physical act of decluttering to include subtle forms of non-grasping, such as letting go of expectations, results, or the need to always be right?

  • As yoga teachers, how do we practice Aparigraha by avoiding the temptation to accumulate certifications, students, or knowledge purely for the sake of external validation or status?

  • How does the fear of "not enough" drive us toward habits of grasping (e.g., hoarding time, holding onto old grievances)? How can we use our yoga practice to cultivate a sense of inner completeness?

  • What is the relationship between Aparigraha and generosity? When we stop grasping what we have, how does that naturally open us up to sharing our knowledge, resources, and time with others?
